Multi Slogans

ಸಾಲ ಮಾಡೋದೇನೋ ಓಕೆ
ಆದರೆ ತೀರ್ಸೋಕಾಗದೆ ಸಾಯ್ತಾರಲ್ಲ ಯಾಕೆ?
This template became very popular after Uppi did it in the UB ad - "Yella okay, cool drink yaake?"

Another slogan on the same auto:
ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸು
ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನೂ ಮೋಹಿಸು

Vishnuvardhan and Ambareesh, very good friends in real life, played over-the-top best friends in this remake of some horrendous village based Tamil melodrama. The handlebar mustache in any movie, to me, meant "avoid the movie with extreme prejudice". It had a very popular song called "Kuchuku" which I had mentioned here.

Have you seen a more graphic representation of "You took my heart away"?

No girls no cry

No Girls

This reminded of that wonderful Bob Marley song - "No Woman, No Cry".

Old English

My presence shell go with thee.

I was really surprised to see an Old English style sentence on an auto (unless it is taken verbatim from Bible or something like that) I was equally surprised that a person using a word like "thee" wrote "shell" instead of "shall"!

Observe the symbol on the right hand side - it represents "female".
This reminded me of B.R.S.'s PU tuition classes where he used to explain - "the circle and arrow represents 'male', symbolic of the hunting; the circle and plus symbol represents 'female', symbolic of the mirror"

77 Hills

Forget the spellings, this is what he intends to say:
ಸೋಲದ ಹುಡುಗ
ಸೋಲಿಸುವ ಹುಡುಗಿ

And the abstract art work would have made Dali proud.

In case you are wondering what the "77 Hills" is, it is about Malai Mahadeshwara Hills.

Prince - Saarathi

ಪ್ರೀತಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಿನ್ಸ್
ಸ್ನೇಹಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸಾರಥಿ
I dont know how people come up with the most absurd lines. And I hope he means "Prince" and not "Preens"!

Marriage/Wife Quotes

This car probably had half of the world's marriage/wife related quotes.
Driver carries no cash.
He's Married.

My wife gives me sound advice.
99% sound. 1% advice.

A man is incomplete until he gets married
Then he's finished.

Married men don't live longer.
It only seems longer.

My wife keeps saying I never listen to her
...or something like that.

Upendra is one of the most talented filmmakers in the contemporary Kannada cinema (stop calling it Sandalwood for Ramssake, it sounds lame!) Much was expected from Uppi, before he lost his track by acting in horrendous Tamil and Telugu remakes.

Uppi was the creator of the most popular Kannada slang ('Dagaar' from 'Tarle Nan Maga'. If you have not heard of the word, please dont ask me for translation) He made the very popular "Shh!", the last decent horror film in Kannada (not considering the unintentional films that turn out to be horror) Next one was "Om", perhaps the best underworld film in Kannada. He made his entry into acting with peculiarly named films like "A" and "Upendra" (clever story within a story involving Vikram-Betaal) with bizarre storylines and unusual screenplay, thereby bringing non-linear narration and misogyny into popular culture. After a decade, he is back to direction. Let us hope we get some interesting movies from him in future.

Temple Art

This kind of art can be seen mostly on travel vehicles which go to temple towns. Is this predominantly a Tamilnadu phenomenon?

Shankar Nag

Shankar Nag was a man of many talents. Apart from his movie and theater pursuits, he had many many interests. He debuted on big screen with "Ondaanondu Kaaladalli", which was based on samurai films. He directed many movies ahead of its times, like "Accident" (showing drugs, politicians and corruption in a never-seen-before realistic way) and "Ondu Muttina Kathe" (first Kannada film to have underwater cinematography) He made the hugely popular and the universally loved TV Series "Malgudi Days". But all of this would not make him immortal among the auto drivers. Ironically, it took just one ordinary film called "Auto Raja", which put him on a different level among auto drivers.

The 100th Post

ಅಪ್ಪ ಅಮ್ಮ First
Figher Next

When I first read this, I thought that it was "Fighter" with a T missing (many people whom I showed it to guessed the same way!) But what does a "Fighter Next" mean anyway? Any why would a cab driver talk about "Fighter"? It must be something else.

Then I wore my cab driver hat and wondered what they would compare with parents. Must be a girl. And then it hit me. "Figher" means "Figure", a street slang for a beautiful girl. Go figher! :)

P.S: When I started this blog, I did not know whether there were 100 slogans in Bangalore (that too in the limited routes I travel) or whether I would have the energy to continue for so long. But I am very happy to be posting my 100th post now!

Sab Ka Malik...

Sab Ka Maalik Ek Hai
Considering that it is a Government of India vehcile, are they implying that the "Ek Malik" is "GoI"?

This reminds me of a Sunil Pal joke, where he says - "Sab ka maalik ek nahin, do hain. Gautam Adhikari aur Markand Adhikari" :)

Caution: Heart Ahead!

Don't break my heart!
The "dagger" is perhaps the most common motif seen on autos! You can find every other auto driver who has experienced a "lavv disappayint".

Thuttaa - Muttaa

ಮುತ್ತು ಕೊಡುವಳು ಬಂದಾಗ
ತುತ್ತು ಕೊಟ್ಟವಳ ಮರಿಬೇಡ
A very oft repeated line in the "Mom vs Wife" domain.

By the way, what caught my attention more than the slogan, was the circle around Ganapathi. It is as if you are seeing Him from a sharp shooter's perspective :)

A very creative way of writing ಅಮ್ಮ with the word ಅ made to look like a mom holding a child.

One More 'Manase'

ಮನಸೇ ಎಲ್ಲಾ
ನೀನೇ ಕಣೆ...!
Addressing the heart as if its a girl, yet another attempt at poetry here.

Also see the Kanaka Dasa photo on the window. By the way, did you ever wonder why you can see many Kanaka Dasa photos on vehicles/posters etc.(that too in the last decade) but not of Purandara Dasa, who was a contemporary philosopher, Carnatic composer and poet? The reason is that Kanaka Dasa was born in Kuruba community, who has been hijacked as a symbol of Kuruba pride. It is such a sad thing that great philosophers/thinkers who philosophize about greater things are always reduced to trivialities by their followers. Wearing the religion/caste pride explicitly on the sleeve is becoming an increasing phenomenon in the last decade or so among all religions/caste.

Whatever it is, this is one anecdote about Kanaka Dasa that I love very very much:

ಚಾಮಯ್ಯ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರೇ
"Chamayya Meshtru" and "Ramachari" are two of the most iconic characters in the history of Kannada cinema. Considered to be among Puttanna Kanagal's best works, "Nagarahaavu" also marked the debut of two major stars - Vishnuvardhan (portraying the rebellious Ramachari) and Ambareesh (in a superb cameo of Jaleela, whose "Bulbull..." became the most common form of eve teasing in the seventies) This is perhaps one of the earliest instances where the place (Chitradurga) was one of the principal characters in a movie.

Trivia Time: This was remade into Hindi as "Zehreela Insaan" which was Rishi Kapor's second film after the phenomenally successful Bobby. Though the movie tanked at the box office, it is remembered for that superb Kishore Kumar song "O Hansini".

One More 'Theru'

ಇದು ಗಜನ ತೇರು
ಮುತ್ತಿಟ್ಟು ಏರು
A very similar one from an old post here.
