If you were born in the seventies or eighties, I bet you would have enjoyed this song immensely every time it was shown on TV: The movie was "Premaloka". It had a non-existent (wafer thin at max) storyline, with terrific songs. It had outrageous sets and even outrageous dialogues, which the conservative Kannada films was not accustomed to. It was the first Kannada movie to have a budget of over a crore rupees. It captured the public's imagination and went on to become a huge blockbuster. Apart from introducing mini skirts and the adorable Juhi Chawla to Kannada films, this was Kannada's first (and perhaps only) musical. Ravichandran as an actor was always below par. This is true even today. But there is one thing you cant take away from him. For showing that you can make profitable Kannada films with bigger budget also. ನಮಗೆ ಅನ್ನ ಕೊಡುವ ರೈತರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ವಂದನೆಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶ ಕಾಯೊ ಯೋಧರಿಗೆ ಈ ಆಟೋ ಶಂಕರನ ಸೆಲ್ಯೂಟ್ I somehow get annoyed when people talk about farmers or soldiers as if they are sacrosanct. To me, they are just another profession they have chosen. Somehow a labor in a garments' factory does not enjoy the same sympathy as a farmer, even though they both might have their own problems. Only an immature mind can make a statement like "We would all be hungry if not for the farmers". Its as if telling we would all be a naturist society if not for cloth manufacturers!

Uppi

Upendra is one of the most talented filmmakers in the contemporary Kannada cinema (stop calling it Sandalwood for Ramssake, it sounds lame!) Much was expected from Uppi, before he lost his track by acting in horrendous Tamil and Telugu remakes. Uppi was the creator of the most popular Kannada slang ('Dagaar' from 'Tarle Nan Maga'. If you have not heard of the word, please dont ask me for translation) He made the very popular "Shh!", the last decent horror film in Kannada (not considering the unintentional films that turn out to be horror) Next one was "Om", perhaps the best underworld film in Kannada. He made his entry into acting with peculiarly named films like "A" and "Upendra" (clever story within a story involving Vikram-Betaal) with bizarre storylines and unusual screenplay, thereby bringing non-linear narration and misogyny into popular culture.
